While you're sure to have some of the items you need on hand already, we suggest investing in quality products where you can, so that they will not fail you when you need them. You'll notice that while a lot of the elements below have multiple uses, some also have overlapping functions: Accounting for a Plan B or C is a good idea when you need to start a fire, charge a lantern or erect a shelter from rain.
